Eighteen year old Cypriot athlete, Janet Michaelidou, is the first Cypriot woman clinching a victory at a World Judo Championship.
According to a press release, Michaelidou who participated in the -78 kilos category at the Word Judo Championship taking place in Uzbekistan won during a game for the first round against Ayuk Otay Arrey Sophina (No47 in the world) and secured 240 points in the world ranking. Now Michaelidou has the 17th place of her category at the World Championship ranking.
Michaelidou ranked 81st in the world before participating in the Championship in Uzbekistan and this victory is expected to be among the first 60 Judo athletes of the world. She aims at getting among the first 40 in 2024, something that will qualify her to participate in the Paris Olympic Games.
