Australian Cypriot star footballer Vasos Kartambis has passed away

VALE – Vasos Kartambis

 

Football NSW was saddened to the hear the news of the passing of former Sydney Olympic FC and Cyprus United (now called Inner West Hawks FC) player and coach Vasos Kartambis following his hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born in 1951 in the tiny Cypriot town of Kythrea, Kartambis played professional football with AEK and Omonia before moving to Australia in 1974 where he played for Sydney Olympic FC as well as

Cyprus United now Stanmore Hawks where he also coached.

A popular figure amongst the local Cypriot and Greek community, Kartambis lived and breathed football till the very end.

The Funeral will be held on Wednesday 16th of March at St Euphemia Greek Orthodox Church at 11am with the burial to follow at Botany Cemetery.

Football NSW would like to pass on its condolences to the Kartambis Family and his close friends, may he rest in heavenly peace.
